More about this artwork

Odilon Redon, a visionary of the Symbolist movement, is celebrated for infusing his artwork with a profound emotional and dream-like quality. "Géraniums et fleurs des champs," painted in 1905, captures Redon's unique ability to blend reality with imagination. This painting showcases a vibrant bouquet of wildflowers and geraniums, vividly set against a muted, sandy-colored background. The choice of flowers brings a kaleidoscope of color to the composition, standing out with their bold reds, radiant blues, and sunny yellows. Each flower is rendered with a soft yet dynamic touch, suggesting movement and life within the stillness of the image. The green vase, simple but elegantly shaped, balances the exuberance of the flowers with its somber tone and smooth texture. This work not only highlights Redon's skill in using pastels to create rich textures and intense color contrasts but also evokes a sense of peaceful contemplation. It invites viewers to pause and reflect, not just on the beauty of nature, but on the power of art to capture the ephemeral and make it everlasting."Geraniums and Wild Flowers" is a testament to Redon's artistic legacy, embodying his fascination with the natural world and his adeptness at rendering its transitory beauty.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
