More about this artwork

"Jeune Homme" (Young Man) by Odilon Redon, created between the years 1896 and 1900, presents a strikingly evocative portrait that captures a moment of profound introspection. This work is a fine example of Redon's unique ability to blend reality with the abstract, using the lithographic technique to create rich textures and depth. The subject of the lithograph, a young man, is depicted in a moment of vulnerability and emotional depth. His head is bowed, his eyes averted, suggesting a moment of deep contemplation or perhaps sadness. The curve of his spine and the muscular tension in his back are rendered with exceptional sensitivity, emphasizing the emotional state of the figure. The background and accompanying elements of the composition—marked by fluid, dream-like strokes—contrast with the finely detailed rendering of the young man's features and upper body. These abstract elements might represent the inner turmoil or the swirling thoughts of the young man, as if his emotional state is echoing into the space around him. This piece serves not only as an exploration of human emotion and psychological depth but also showcases Redon’s mastery over the lithographic medium, where he manipulates light and shadow to create forms that seem both tangible and ethereal.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
