More about this artwork

In Odilon Redon's poignant lithograph titled from 1896, viewers encounter a profoundly evocative and visually rich image of introspection and metaphorical depth. The composition shows the profile of an aged knight, his face cast in shadow, which creates an impression of weariness or deep contemplation. The detail within the knight's armor and cloak suggests a life of rugged experience, signifying the burdens and perhaps the wisdom accrued from years of existence. In the background to the right, a contrasting and curious element of the artwork makes itself visible—an angelic figure appears, seemingly mid-flight with outstretched arms. This could signify a call to spiritual awakening or offer a poignant reminder of the knight’s past ideals and aspirations. To the left background, the presence of another figure, perhaps another spiritual or symbolic figure, complements the narrative of a life poised between earthly struggles and transcendent hopes."The Old Knight" serves not only as a personal reflection of the character depicted but also invites viewers to meditate on their own journeys through time, struggles, and redemptions.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
