More about this artwork

Konštantín Bauer's evocative 1928 painting "Košické strechy" (Roofs of Košice) captures a lively depiction of rooftops under a tumultuous sky. This artwork embodies an engaging blend of expressionism and abstraction, characteristics that define Bauer's unique artistic style. The scene portrays the irregular and steeply sloped rooftops of Košice, possibly portraying the aged, densely packed structures typical of older European cities. The vibrant reds and fiery oranges of the roofs contrast dramatically against the moody, swirling grays and blues of the sky above, suggesting an impending storm or the last throes of a setting sun.Bauer's use of thick, textured brushstrokes adds a tangible depth to the scene, lending each structure a rugged, almost tangible character. The shadowed eaves and highlighted ridges create a dynamic interplay of light and dark, enhancing the painting’s dramatic impact."Košické strechy" is not just a visual study of urban forms but also an emotive representation, possibly reflecting the artist's personal connection or feelings towards Košice. This painting invites viewers to not only observe a cityscape but to feel the weight of the sky and the storied lives that pulse beneath these vibrant roofs.
