More about this artwork

"Strassenbild (Dresden)" (1910), painted by German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, captures the vibrant hustle and dynamic architecture of a Dresden street scene. In this artwork, Kirchner employs bold, vivid colors and swift brushstrokes to convey the motion and energy of urban life. The blues, pinks, and yellows are not just mere representations but are imbued with emotional resonance, reflecting the artist's subjective experience of the city. The composition features intersecting perspectives, with buildings, people, and a streetcar depicted in a somewhat distorted, yet visually compelling manner. The large building dominating the left side of the canvas contrasts starkly with the more quaint and sharply angled house on the right. This juxtaposition possibly reflects the clash between the old and the new architectural styles or the pace of modern life against traditional values.Kirchner's portrayal of the figures, elongated and somewhat abstracted, mirrors his interest in the psychological undercurrents of city dwellers. The painting pulses with a rhythm that seems to parallel the swift strides of the pedestrians and the moving tram, encapsulating a moment in time within the broad, expressive strokes of color and form.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
