More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the introspective beauty of Odilon Redon's "Guerrier," a striking example of this master symbolist's unique artistic vision. This intimate portrayal captures the side profile of a warrior, depicted with a serene and dignified expression that draws in the viewer. The artwork is characterized by a rich palette of earthy tones contrasted with the vivid orange and yellow hues that illuminate the warrior’s helmet, imbuing the piece with a vibrant, almost ethereal quality.Redon's use of soft pastels on a subtly textured background lends a dream-like atmosphere to the painting. The warrior’s helmet, adorned with intricate designs, including what appears to be a mythical creature, suggests themes of heroism and the fantastical elements that often permeate Redon's work. The gentle, almost whispering lines sketch out the contours of the warrior’s face and garments, contributing to the overall sense of calm and stoicism. This artwork transcends mere visual depiction, inviting viewers to explore themes of nobility, protection, and the inner battles of the human spirit. "Guerrier" is not just a portrayal of a warrior but a glimpse into the soul of the depicted figure, reflective of Redon’s deep engagement with the unseen forces of the inner world.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
