More about this artwork

"Zerissenheit," a striking painting by the Austrian artist Karl Wiener, created around 1928, embodies a vivid expressionist style that captures a profound emotional and psychological complexity. The title, translating to "Torn Apart" in English, aptly reflects the thematic essence and visual tumult articulated throughout the work. This painting is a dynamic interplay of vivid colors and jagged lines, illustrating an intense emotional discordance and inner turmoil. The erratic, overlapping forms and the sharp, angular lines suggest a chaos that resonates with the theme of inner conflict and fragmentation. The use of contrasting colors—fiery reds, deep blacks, and calming greens—enhances the sense of a turbulent psyche, pulling the viewer into a visceral experience of the artist's emotional state. The composition, devoid of identifiable figures or objects, uses abstract forms to evoke a sense of unrest and upheaval. This approach allows viewers to engage with the painting on a deeply personal level, interpreting the abstract shapes and forms through their own lens of emotional experiences."Zerissenheit" is a profound example of Karl Wiener’s mastery in conveying complex human emotions through abstract expressionism.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
