More about this artwork

"The Port of Morgat," painted by Odilon Redon in 1882, captures the serene atmosphere of a small fishing port in Brittany, France. Set against a dynamic sky marked by wispy clouds, Redon’s depiction offers a painting rich in texture and imbued with a sense of quietude. In the foreground, rocky terrain and shallow pockets of water lead the viewer's eyes toward a solitary black fishing boat with tall masts, seemingly anchored for the day. The body of water reflects the soft light of either an early morning or a late afternoon, creating a gentle shimmer that contrasts with both the dark hull of the boat and the stark, rugged shoreline.Beyond the boat, the scene includes modest, weather-beaten structures that line the shore, their forms simplified and somewhat subdued under the expansive sky. These buildings, possibly homes or shacks used by the fishermen, are rendered in earthy tones that harmonize with the natural landscape. This work stands out as a tranquilly composed scene, focusing on the day-to-day existence of the coastal town. Redon, usually noted for his more fantastical and dreamlike compositions, embraces realism in this piece, offering viewers a glimpse into the humble beauty of Morgat’s maritime activity.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
