More about this artwork

Discover the Grace and Elegance of Kōno Bairei’s MasterpieceWe invite you to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of "Bairei gafu, Pl.37" (1905), a striking woodblock print by celebrated Japanese artist Kōno Bairei. This exquisite work captures the delicate interplay between wildlife and nature, which is a hallmark of traditional Japanese art.In this piece, Bairei portrays a bird, intricately detailed and poised with elegance, amidst a lush backdrop of blooming flowers and dense foliage. The bird, possibly a pheasant, is rendered in warm hues, with its long, sweeping tail feathers gracefully descending towards the rocky ground it stands upon. Surrounding the bird are clusters of robust peonies, symbolizing wealth, prosperity, and beauty in Japanese culture. The contrast between the soft petals and the bird’s vivid plumage invites viewers to appreciate the harmony and balance nature embodies.Bairei’s technique in using ink and color showcases his mastery in kacho-e (bird-and-flower paintings). The artist's skilled hand can be seen in the subtle gradations of shade and the fine line work that brings this serene scene to life. This painting not only reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Meiji period but also evokes a timeless connection to the natural world. "Bairei gafu, Pl.37" serves as a perfect example of how art can transcend time and place, providing a quiet moment of reflection for all who view it.
