More about this artwork

This evocative painting by Amedeo Modigliani, known as "The Pretty Housewife" ("La Jolie Ménagère"), illustrates a figure that perfectly embodies Modigliani's distinctive stylistic approach, blending elements of modernism with an intimate portrayal. The subject, a housewife, is featured full-length, occupying a substantial part of the canvas, which is somewhat unusual in Modigliani's work mainly recognized by its portraits.Dressed in a simple, dark-colored dress with a lighter, possibly white apron, the woman stands against a warmly toned background that suggests the interior of a home. Her pose is demure and upright, with her hands gently holding a basket, possibly containing bread or other household items, indicative of her daily routines and responsibilities.Modigliani’s treatment of the figure is both gentle and striking. The woman’s face, consistent with the artist's signature style, is elongated, with a slender nose and neck, and delicate lips. Her eyes, rendered as simplified, almost closed forms, alongside the soft contours of her face, express a serene ambiance. Her hair is styled up, neatly tied, enhancing her graceful demeanor. The background is muted and abstract, with indistinct shapes that might hint at domestic settings like shelving or walls, allowing the viewer to focus more on the figure and her expression.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
