More about this artwork

The painting "Tygers At Play" by George Stubbs is a captivating depiction of two young tigers engaged in playful interaction. The image is rendered in grayscale, emphasizing textural details and shadow play, which give a lifelike presence to the creatures. The tigers are shown in a natural setting that includes some rocky elements and sparse vegetation, suggesting a wild and secluded environment. In the forefront, one tiger is positioned closer to the viewer, crouched with its head turned towards us, eyes wide and alert. This pose captures the tiger's readiness and alertness, typical of an intelligent predator even in playful scenarios. The second tiger lies on its back in a pose of submission, with paws playfully up in the air, suggesting a moment of relaxed vulnerability and trust. This posture often signifies comfort and enjoyment in the presence of a companion during play. The backdrop includes a dark, cavernous space that fades into shadow, adding an element of mystery and depth to the scene. This choice of background not only focuses the viewer’s attention on the tigers but also enhances the feeling of their isolation from human interference, in a space that is purely their own.George Stubbs’s work often reflects his keen observation and understanding of animal anatomy and behavior, and "Tygers At Play" is a testament to his ability to convey not just the physical but also the spirited dynamic of his subjects.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
