More about this artwork

The painting titled "A Lion Attacking a Horse" by George Stubbs depicts a dramatic and intense encounter between two powerful creatures in a lush, atmospheric landscape. At the center of the composition, a lion aggressively lunges at a rearing horse. The lion's paws grasp onto the horse’s body, sinking its claws into the horse’s flesh as it aims to overpower its prey. The horse, in turn, is captured in a moment of desperate defense, rearing up on its hind legs, its muscles taut and eyes wide with fear. The dynamic interaction between the animals is rendered with striking realism, showcasing Stubbs’ mastery in portraying animal musculature and movement. The powerful forms of the lion and horse are contrasted against a softer, idyllic background that features lush trees, serene water, and a distant landscape under a broad, cloudy sky, which adds a sense of depth and context to the ferocity of the foreground action. This work not only reflects Stubbs' keen interest in anatomical accuracy, which he studied intensively, but also his ability to convey raw, emotive energy in his animal subjects, making a poignant statement about the brutal realities of nature.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
