More about this artwork

The painting titled "A Tyger" by George Stubbs features a strikingly detailed depiction of a large tiger in a naturalistic setting. The tiger is lying down under the dark, textured shade of a large tree, gazing contemplatively into the distance. Its body is turned slightly towards the viewer, showcasing its muscular build and intricately patterned coat of fur marked with numerous bold, dark spots. The background landscape provides a serene yet dramatic setting with distant mountains and a mist that suggests either early morning or late afternoon. Young trees and shrubs are scattered sparingly, adding to the wild and peaceful ambiance. The varied texture and detailed execution in the tree's bark and leaves, as well as in the fur of the tiger, display Stubbs' meticulous approach and skill in rendering both wildlife and natural sceneries. This artwork captures the quiet power and majesty of the tiger, placing it within a landscape that emphasizes both its beauty and the solitary nature often associated with these creatures. Stubbs’ effective use of lighting and shading adds a dramatic flair that enriches the overall impact of the work, making it a captivating example of his mastery in portraying animals in their environments.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
