More about this artwork

The artwork titled "Horse In The Surf With Three Seagulls" by Leo Gestel is beautifully rendered in a minimalist style that captures the serenity and dynamic movement of nature. The painting features a sturdy horse standing confidently in the surf, with waves gently lapping at its feet. The horse's pose and expression suggest a noble calmness, perhaps enjoying the cool water and gentle breeze.Above and around the horse, Gestel has painted three seagulls. They are depicted in mid-flight, adding a sense of freedom and liveliness to the scene. The lines used to portray the seagulls are swift and flowing, harmonizing well with the soft curves that outline the horse and the waves, enhancing the overall feeling of motion and spontaneity. The use of line in this drawing is particularly striking, with Gestel employing a confident, fluid style that brings life to the scene despite the simplicity of the details. The composition of elements—horse, seagulls, and sea—creates a peaceful yet dynamic interaction between the realms of air and water, underlining the artist's skill in capturing both the essence of the subjects and the mood of the moment.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
