More about this artwork

The artwork titled *Peace Dove* by Leo Gestel is a striking black and white ink drawing that depicts a dove in mid-flight, carrying an olive branch in its beak. The dove, a symbol traditionally associated with peace, is illustrated with dynamic lines and a sense of motion, emphasized by the streaks radiating from behind it, suggesting its swift movement through space. The detail in the dove's feathers is rendered through fine, expressive strokes, giving an indication of the texture while lending the image a vibrant, energetic feel. The olive branch, another strong symbol of peace and reconciliation, is shown clearly in the bird's beak, reinforcing the theme of the artwork. The date "11 Nov 1918" inscribed at the bottom right corner is particularly significant, as it marks the day the armistice was signed to end World War I, suggesting that this piece was created as a commemorative or celebratory gesture in response to the end of the conflict and the beginning of peace.Overall, Gestel's *Peace Dove* serves as both a powerful symbol of hope and a potent reminder of the joy that accompanies the cessation of conflict.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
