More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Man Getting Medicines," depicts a scene set in the early 20th century. The artwork features two primary figures interacting across a wooden counter. On the left, a gentleman dressed in a traditional dark suit and bowler hat stands holding both a cane and a book or box under his arm. He is also handing over money, likely to settle a transaction. The right side of the image shows another man, appearing to be a pharmacist or apothecary, who is receiving the money. The pharmacist is depicted with a beard and dressed in a patterned jacket, his attention focused on the gentleman. The setting includes a sign hanging above the counter that reads "SUBSCRIPTIONS RECEIVED HERE," suggesting the engagement involves a subscription service or a regular arrangement for obtaining medicines. This could indicate a routine purchase of medical supplies or prescriptions, common during the time period represented. The overall style, color palette, and detail in the clothing and expressions convey a sense of daily life and social interaction during the era, with its focus on personal exchanges and the significance of community-based services such as local pharmacies. Edward Penfield's work often captured slices of life, using vivid yet straightforward compositions to highlight everyday activities, and this painting is a classic representation of his observational style and focus on early 20th-century American culture.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
