More about this artwork

This striking artwork by Edward Penfield, titled "American Football Player," vividly captures the dynamic intensity and early styles of American football. The figure in the painting appears poised and ready for action, dressed in vintage football attire, characteristic of the early 1900s. Notably, his uniform features a thick, striped sweater marked with a large letter 'H', possibly indicating the name of his team or college. The athlete clutches a dark leather football to his side, suggesting he could be running or preparing to dodge an opponent. His expression, determined and slightly tense, along with his forward-leaning posture, adds to the sense of motion and the energetic feel of the moment captured.Penfield's use of bold, flat colors and strong outlines is a hallmark of his style, which complements the graphic, almost poster-like quality of the image. The bright orange background not only heightens the contrast and visual impact but also injects a vibrant energy into the scene, enhancing the feeling of movement and urgency depicted. This choice of style and color makes the artwork stand out and effectively communicates the vigor and briskness of the sport.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
