More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Man and Woman Shaking Hands," features two figures depicted in an elegant and stylized manner that is typical of Penfield's work. The man is dressed in a winter coat, speckled with browns and adorned with gingham patches, suggesting a sense of style yet practicality. His accessories include a bowler hat, a checkered scarf, and he carries a cane and a book, which might indicate his interests or social status. His posture, with one hand adjusting his scarf and the other outstretched towards the woman, suggests a polite or formal greeting. The woman, on the other hand, is shown wearing a long, flowing green coat, cinched at the waist, which amplifies her elegant silhouette. Her attire is complemented by a stylish hat adorned with what appears to be a feather, adding to her poised appearance. Like the man, she also carries a book, hinting at a shared context of intellect or a social event involving literature. Her posture, as she extends her hand towards the man, conveys a mix of confidence and grace. The background of the image is minimalistic, which focuses attention on the interaction between the two figures. Their handshake bridges them in a moment of polite society, possibly signaling either a meeting or a farewell.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
