More about this artwork

The painting by Edward Penfield titled "Woman Sitting On A Chair Holding A Book With A Cat Looking On" depicts an elegant scene filled with domestic calm and artistic charm. It features a woman dressed in a long, flowing blue gown adorned with intricate ornamental designs around the cuffs and collar, suggesting a style from the late 19th or early 20th century. Her posture is relaxed yet dignified as she sits on a plain wooden chair, one hand resting on her lap, possibly holding a book. The woman’s expression is contemplative and slightly aloof, directed towards the viewer, which adds a direct and engaging element to the composition.Adding to the domestic vibe, a cat with striking tabby markings stands next to her, looking up, possibly seeking attention or intrigued by her calm demeanor. The interaction—or the lack thereof—between the cat and the woman adds a layer of everyday life and pet companionship to the painting. The background is minimal yet effective, featuring a decorative paneled screen or curtain that adds depth and texture to the scene. The use of bold outlines and flat areas of color are reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style, emphasizing aesthetics and design alongside practical depiction.Overall, Penfield's work captures a serene moment in time, combining human and animal elements within a stylish and harmonious interior setting. The artwork showcases Penfield’s skillful use of line and color to create a timeless piece that evokes a peaceful and introspective mood.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
