More about this artwork

The painting "Man Riding Bicycle" by Edward Penfield features a distinguished gentleman riding a bicycle. The scene is vibrant yet simplistic in its execution, typical of Penfield’s style, which often leans toward flat areas of color and bold outlines, reflecting the Art Nouveau and poster art influences of his time. The man in the painting is dressed in a striking yellow coat, which vividly stands out against the softer, muted background. His attire is quite formal compared to today's usual bicycling gear, consisting of a yellow coat with a brown collar, a cap, and pointed shoes. This suggests that the painting dates back to a time when such outfits were more common for casual outings. He also has a neatly trimmed mustache and a serious expression, focusing ahead as he rides. The background features a coastline with a tranquil blue sea juxtaposed against a rocky cliff. There is also a tree with autumnal orange leaves, indicating perhaps a fall setting. The colors are somewhat subdued apart from the bright yellow of the man’s coat and the orange tree, which draws the viewer's attention to the subject and his vibrant attire.Overall, Penfield's work not only captures a moment of leisure but does so with an aesthetic that balances between subtlety and prominence, typifying his skill in poster art and illustration.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
