More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Vintage Christmas Card," captures a festive and stylish scene, rendered in a distinctive early 20th century illustrative style. The artwork prominently features a young woman dressed in a vibrant red winter coat with a lush black fur collar. She also wears a striking black hat adorned with fur, complementing her fashionable winter attire. Her expression, slightly turned towards the viewer, gives a sense of engagement and softness, set against the crisp winter backdrop symbolized by the refreshing hues used throughout the painting. In the background, there’s a lightly shaded white and green environment, hinting at a wintry, outdoor setting. A traditional Christmas wreath decorated with red berries hangs in the upper left corner, evoking a feeling of holiday cheer and warmth. A small, white dog appears by the woman's side, contributing to the serene and homely mood of the scene. The artwork uses broad, flat areas of color and clear outlines, typical of Penfield’s style, which is both graphic and minimalistic, yet still rich in detail and ambiance. Penfield's use of color, form, and composition creates a charming and evocative image that celebrates the elegance and spirit of the holiday season.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
