More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield is a charmingly vintage depiction of a Christmas scene. In the artwork, we see three central figures gathered around a warmly decorated table, suggesting a family or close acquaintances sharing a moment during the festive season. An elegantly dressed woman and a sharply groomed man are in a seated position, while a young boy, also finely attired, interacts with a black box at the table's edge, possibly a gift or an object of fascination. The man is holding an open small red book or album which might be a collection of Christmas carols or perhaps a photo album, considering the nostalgic feel of the scene. The woman, turned slightly towards the man, seems engaged in the activity, adding to the intimate atmosphere of the scene. A richly-adorned Christmas tree, laden with ornaments and candles, stands to the left, enhancing the festive environment.Another interesting detail is the dog sitting by the table, wearing a red collar, which further complements the setting, implying the coziness and inclusivity of a family home during the holiday season. The background features a window adorned with a printed design that echoes the holiday motifs seen on the tree and adds a decorative element that frames the scene inside. The bold, clear lines and stylized coloration typical of Penfield’s work adds to the graphic quality of the piece, reinforcing its identity as a poster.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
