More about this artwork

This painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "In The Garden," captures a serene moment shared between two figures, presumably a mother and her young daughter, seated outdoors. The setting suggests a lush garden, highlighted by a backdrop of thick greenery and flecks of colorful flowers. The tranquility of the scene is reinforced by the soft, impressionistic brushstrokes typical of Cassatt’s style. On the left, an adult woman is depicted with her back partially toward the viewer, providing a profile view of her face. Her attire is light-colored, possibly a white or pale yellow dress, which suggests the lightness and ease of a warm, sunny day. She appears engaged with the child, leaning slightly towards her.The child, seated facing the viewer, wears a vibrant pink dress with a wide, frilly collar, and a large straw hat adorned with a black ribbon and a smaller white decoration. Her expression is bright and cheerful, indicating a moment of lighthearted interaction. Her cheeks are rosy, perhaps flushed from the sun or the joy of the moment, and her eyes meet the viewer with a sense of innocence and candor. The overall composition, with its intimate framing and focus on domestic life, is reflective of Cassatt’s interest in the themes of motherhood and the everyday activities of women and children.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
