More about this artwork

Desert of Gizeh" by David RobertsDavid Roberts’ evocative painting, "Approach of the Simoom. Desert of Gizeh," painted between 1846 and 1849, captures a dramatic moment in the vast expanse of the Egyptian desert near Gizeh. The scene is set against the backdrop of the iconic Great Sphinx and the Pyramids, bathed in the soft, fading light of a setting sun which dips close to the horizon, casting a warm glow across the landscape. The painting portrays a group of travelers reacting to the imminent threat of a simoom - a violent, hot, and dry desert wind. The figures, both humans and animals, are seen in various states of urgent preparation and apparent distress. Some cover their faces, lying close to the ground to shield themselves from the approaching storm, while others are depicted in a state of haste, securing garments or belongings. A lone rider on a camel appears in silhouette against the sun, adding a dynamic element to the composition.Roberts’ use of light and shadow, combined with the vivid coloring of the sky and the meticulous detail with which he renders both the human figures and the ancient statues, creates a palpable tension. This artwork not only showcases his skill in capturing historical landscapes but also his ability to convey a narrative filled with emotional depth and atmospheric tension."Approach of the Simoom. Desert of Gizeh" is a striking exploration of nature's power and the human spirit’s resilience, set against the timeless grandeur of Egypt’s ancient monuments.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
