More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer, titled "Mount Monadnock," captures the serene and picturesque landscape around the mountain, which is located in New Hampshire. The foreground of the painting features a thick forest of dark green pine trees, depicting a dense, shadowy appearance that contrasts starkly with the brightly lit scene behind. Above the tree line, the middle ground shows a more open space, with lighter touches of green, perhaps suggesting a meadow or a clearer area. The dominant feature of the painting is Mount Monadnock itself in the background. It is depicted under a soft, clear sky, its peak bathed in sunlight that highlights its bare, rocky surfaces. The top part of the mountain glows with yellows and light browns, suggesting the presence of sunlight that starkly contrasts with the shaded, darker tones of the immediate forest and the snowy white patches suggesting winter or early spring conditions. This play of light emphasizes the majestic isolation of the mountain. The overall mood conveyed by Thayer is one of tranquil beauty and timelessness, characteristic of his works, where nature is often presented in a sublime and idealized manner. The use of light and shadow, as well as the contrast between the dark, dense foreground and the illuminated background, creates a sense of depth and draws the viewer into the scene. Thayer's brushwork, which combines loosely defined forms with more detailed strokes where needed (like on the snow-capped peak), gives the painting a dynamic yet peaceful feel.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
