More about this artwork

This painting, "Dublin Pond, New Hampshire" by Abbott Handerson Thayer, beautifully captures a serene landscape. The composition primarily focuses on a tranquil body of water that mirrors the subtle, varying tones of the sky above. This scene is framed by foliage on the left, which Thayer paints with dense and lively brushstrokes, contrasting the smoother and more reflective surface of the water. The background features a gentle, rolling landscape dotted with soft architectural forms, possibly houses or farms, that blend subtly into the hills behind them. The colors are muted, with calm blues and grays dominating, yet there are touches of warmer tones seen in the reflections on the water, providing a hint of the time of day, possibly early evening. The overall effect is quiet and reflective, with Thayer utilizing his mastery of light and naturalistic colors to evoke a sense of peace and natural beauty. It's a painting that invites the viewer to pause and absorb the quiet atmosphere of the depicted scene.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
