More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer vividly illustrates the concept of camouflage in nature. Titled "Copperhead Snake On Dead Leaves, Study for Book Concealing Coloration In The Animal Kingdom," the artwork portrays the copperhead snake almost hidden among a dense layer of fallen autumn leaves. The snake's body, with its distinctive chestnut brown patterns, blends seamlessly into the background of similarly hued leaves. Thayer has meticulously rendered the textures and colors of the leaves, which vary from pale yellow to deep russet tones, mirroring the pigmentation of the snake. Due to the effectiveness of the camouflage, the presence of the snake is not immediately noticeable, illustrating the survival mechanism that allows the snake to avoid predators and approach prey.Thayer’s painting serves as a study and an exquisite example of his interests in protective coloration in animals, a theme that was central to some of his more scientific works. The detailed attention to naturalistic colors and textures not only emphasizes the snake’s ability to hide but also exhibits Thayer’s skill in using art to communicate scientific principles.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
