More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer, titled "Peacock In The Woods, Study For Book Concealing Coloration In The Animal Kingdom," beautifully portrays a peacock subtly blended into a lush woodland backdrop. Created in 1907, the artwork illustrates Thayer’s keen interest in the natural world and specifically, the concept of camouflage. In the painting, the peacock, with its resplendent tail fanned out, displays a rich tapestry of vibrant blues and greens complemented by the eye-catching patterns of its feathers, which mirror the complexity and depth of the forest around it. The forest scene is dense with varying shades of green, punctuated by dapples of light filtering through the leaves, invoking a play of light and shadow that subtly conceals the bird. This portrayal not only captures the physical beauty of the peacock but also emphasizes its ability to blend into its surroundings despite its seemingly conspicuous appearance.Thayer uses a mix of precise and loose brushstrokes, giving life and texture to both the peacock and its environment. His attention to detail and color balance enhances the interplay between the animal and its habitat, illustrating his thesis about protective coloration in nature—a subject Thayer was deeply passionate about.Overall, Thayer's work not only celebrates the visual splendor of the natural world but also invites viewers to consider the intricate ways in which animals adapt to and integrate with their environments for survival.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
