More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer captures a stunning moment of natural beauty, either at sunrise or sunset, which is vividly reflected in the painting's title. The sky depicted in the artwork is a mesmerizing blend of colors, with soft pinks and warm oranges melting into cooler tones of purple and blue, creating a serene yet dynamic atmosphere. These color shifts suggest the transformative moments of early morning or late evening when the sun's position amplifies the colors in the sky.The lower section of the artwork presents a dark, shadowed landscape, which forms a stark contrast to the luminous sky above. This could be interpreted as a forest or a rugged terrain silhouetted against the light, creating a layer of mystery and depth. The varied texture and strokes in the darker area enhance this feeling of density and obscurity.Thayer, known for his work in both art and natural history, may have used this contrast between the vibrant sky and the somber earth to explore themes of camouflage in nature, a concept he was deeply interested in. The painting likely serves not only as a breathtaking landscape but also as a study on how light and color affect visibility, which is a crucial element in understanding visual perception and concealment in the animal kingdom. This piece beautifully embodies both Thayer's artistic and scientific explorations, making it a profound fusion of his interests and talents.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
