More about this artwork

This painting by Abbott Handerson Thayer, titled "My Children," is a strikingly intimate and evocative portrayal of his three children. The artwork features a central figure, a young woman dressed in a flowing white gown, standing upright and holding a clutch of green leaves. Her gaze is serene yet distant, directed outward towards the viewer with a calm poise that is both inviting and reserved.Flanking her are two other figures, presumably her siblings, depicted in darker, more earthy tones compared to her luminous dress. The figure to the left, a younger girl, appears slightly behind and in the shadow of the central figure, gazing towards her with an expression that suggests both admiration and contemplation. To the right, a boy is shown with a gesture that seems to support or draw attention to the central figure, as he grasps a branch or piece of the natural surroundings that envelope the group. The backdrop of the painting is composed of a blend of forest and sky, with patches of dark greens and blues that contrast with the central figure's white dress. This setting not only frames the subjects but also enhances the ethereal and somewhat mysterious quality of the scene.Overall, the composition, the interplay of colors, and the expressiveness of the figures create a narrative that speaks to themes of family bonds, nature, and the purity associated with youth.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
