More about this artwork

This painting by Christen Købke portrays Cecilie Margrethe Petersen, née Købke, who was the artist's sister. The canvas captures her half-length, in a formal posture, with an earnest expression that suggests a serene yet strong personality. The subject's attire is particularly notable, characterized by a vibrant rust-red blouse with a wide, off-the-shoulder neckline that contrasts against a rich, dark background. The blouse features finely detailed gathers around the cuffs and a delicate white garment just peeking at her neckline. Her face exhibits a soft complexion, and her expression is almost contemplative, with her eyes slightly averted from the viewer, giving her a reserved aura. Adding to her elegant appearance, her hair is styled in tight ringlets that frame her face and is adorned with a simple, dark headdress. The jewelry she wears is modest and refined; a thin gold necklace with a small pendant and matching earrings, which lends an air of sophistication and grace. She is seated beside a furniture piece, possibly a chair or table, with part of its ornate structure and a textile with a rich, floral design visible. This detail not only adds a touch of opulence to the scene but also anchors her presence in a domestic environment.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
