More about this artwork

This painting by Christen Købke, titled "Johanne Pløyen, Born Bachmann," captures the portrait of an elderly woman with a distinctively warm and engaging presence. The woman's face is characterized by deep-set, gently smiling eyes and an expressive mouth, suggesting a kind and approachable personality. Her attire is traditional and conservative, featuring a dark dress accented with a white lace collar and cuffs, which complement the elaborate white lace bonnet framing her face. This bonnet, along with her gentle expression, serves as a focal point, drawing attention to her visage and the texture of the lace. The background of the painting is subdued and muted, ensuring that the viewer’s focus remains on the subject herself. The soft, naturalistic brushwork used to render her skin and features adds to the lifelike quality of the portrait, making the subject seem almost ready to speak. Købke's skill in portraiture is evident in the careful attention to the textures of different materials, such as the lace and the fabric of her dress, as well as the realistic rendering of her skin’s texture and the lively twinkle in her eyes.Overall, the painting exudes a sense of dignity and grace, capturing not just the physical appearance of Johanne Pløyen, but also hinting at her personality and perhaps her social status or the respect she commanded within her community.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
