More about this artwork

The painting "Aerial Study" by Christen Købke is a delicate and ethereal depiction of the sky, focusing on the nuanced play of light and shadow among clouds. The painter employs a predominantly soft palette of blues, grays, and whites, which imparts a gentle yet dynamic atmosphere to the artwork. In the foreground, a layer of heavier, darker clouds stretches across the frame, suggesting an overcast condition which might be clearing up slowly. Towards the center and the background, the clouds lighten, both in color and density, with breaks that reveal a serene blue sky. These openings allow beams of sunlight to touch and highlight parts of the clouds, creating an interplay of light that gives depth and vibrancy to the scene. The overall composition eschews detailed landscapes or human figures, focusing purely on the skyscape. It encourages the viewer to contemplate the ever-changing forms and light within the sky's expanse. The horizontal format of the painting, along with the gentle gradation from darker to lighter clouds, suggests a tranquil progression, akin to quietly observing the sky clear up after a storm.Købke's technique, which beautifully captures both the texture of the clouds and the elusive quality of natural light, makes "Aerial Study" a contemplative and visually soothing piece.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
