More about this artwork

This delightful portrait by Christen Købke titled "Ida Thiele, Later Married Wilde, as a Child," captures the endearing innocence and curiosity of a young child, Ida Thiele. Painted in 1830, the artwork showcases Købke's precise and tender approach to portraiture, particularly of children. In the painting, the viewer observes a close-up view of Ida, from a slightly above angle, emphasizing her youthful features and expressions. She is dressed in a simple yet elegant red dress with puffed sleeves, a typical style of the period, suggesting a sense of gentility and warmth. Her fair skin and blond curls are rendered with careful attention to lighting and texture, highlighting the softness of her youthful appearance.Ida's expression is particularly captivating. Her eyes are slightly turned away from the viewer, focused on something out of frame, which invites us to wonder about her thoughts or what has caught her attention. It's a moment of childhood concentration, beautifully frozen in time by Købke's skillful brushwork. The neutral background serves to focus all attention on Ida, making her the clear subject of this intimate portrayal.Overall, this painting not only provides a glimpse into the early 19th-century European child portraiture but also showcases Købke’s ability to convey subtle emotional depth and personality through his work.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
