More about this artwork

The painting titled "Cupid Flying Away From Psyche" by Edward Burne-Jones is a striking and evocative piece composed of two panels, each portraying one figure against a starry night sky, providing a visually compelling narrative steeped in mythology and emotional depth. The left panel features the figure of Psyche, rendered in a flowing gown that glimmers with a golden hue, suggesting the fabric's ethereal quality. She is depicted in a pose of longing or despair, her arm raised towards the sky as she gazes upwards, perhaps pleading or reaching out towards Cupid, symbolized by the crescent moon above, which adds to the celestial, dreamlike quality of the scene. On the right panel, Cupid is shown in mid-flight, his body angled away from Psyche and moving towards the upper right corner of the frame, suggesting his departure. His wings are detailed and expansive, spanning across much of the panel, highlighted with a golden sheen similar to Psyche's gown, emphasizing the divine or supernatural nature of his being. Cupid looks forward, his posture and the set of his figure suggesting determination or resignation as he leaves. Both panels are dominated by a dark, star-scattered sky that serves as a backdrop to the figures, emphasizing their isolation and the vastness of the space between them.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
