More about this artwork

Stanislas Lépine’s enchanting painting, "La Seine à Saint-Ouen," captures the serene beauty of the Seine River as it flows through the suburb of Saint-Ouen, located just outside Paris. This exquisite landscape is an homage to the calm and picturesque qualities of the riverside, demonstrating Lépine’s mastery in rendering natural environments. The composition focuses on a stretch of the river, where the gentle flow of water creates a mirror-like surface, reflecting the blue of the sky and the greenery of the surrounding landscape. On the left, lush trees dominate the scene, their dense foliage mirrored in the water, creating a symmetrical balance that enhances the painting’s tranquility. The right side opens up to reveal a distant view of buildings that line the riverbank, possibly indicating the outskirts of Saint-Ouen.In the foreground, a solitary boat gently drifts, adding a human element to the natural setting and perhaps suggesting the quiet activities of daily life near the water’s edge. The soft, diffused light and subtle color palette Lépine employs lend the scene a dream-like quality, making "La Seine à Saint-Ouen" not just a visual recreation of a location but also an expression of mood and atmosphere. This painting is a beautiful representation of the French riverscape, characterized by its reflective waters, soft skies, and a calming, almost meditative presence.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
