More about this artwork

This painting by Odilon Redon, titled "Wildflowers," captures a beautiful arrangement of various flowers loosely gathered in a dark, somewhat reflective vase. The artwork is rich in color and texture, providing a vibrant contrast against the muted, earth-toned background. The bouquet features a mix of flowers including bright blue and slight purplish-blue flowers that might suggest cornflowers, vivid yellow blooms resembling daisies or sunflowers, and reddish flowers that could be interpreted as poppies or anemones. These main flowers are complemented by smaller green foliage and some darker, perhaps berry-like, details that add depth and variety to the composition.Redon's use of pastels enhances the softness of the scene, giving it a dreamy quality. The strokes are vibrant yet gentle, allowing each flower to stand out while collectively creating a harmonious whole. The vase, with its deep, reflective blue color, acts as a strong visual anchor in the composition, drawing in the viewer's gaze and emphasizing the natural beauty of the flowers it holds. This painting exemplifies Redon's skill in blending realism with his unique symbolist approach, capturing not only the visual beauty of the flowers but also evoking a sense of serene contemplation.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
