More about this artwork
Henri van der Stok's iconic print "Mars" vividly encapsulates the strength and mystique associated with its namesake, the Roman god of war. Crafted in a compelling woodcut style, the image presents a bold, armored face, set against a backdrop that suggests both the infinity of space and the classical elements of war. The face is framed by a helmet adorned with rays, perhaps indicating the divine nature or the fierce brilliance of the god. Below this stern countenance, symbols reminiscent of celestial bodies and the astrological sign for Mars further embed the warfare theme into a cosmic context. This artwork invites viewers to contemplate the dual aspects of Mars - not just as a deity of combat but also as an emblem of protector and order, asserting his presence in the vastness of space.
