More about this artwork
Explore the celestial depths and artistry of Henri van der Stok's "Sterrenbeeld Vissen," an enchanting piece that delves into the astrological sign of Pisces. Created between 1880 and 1946, this evocative work captures the imagination with its intricate lines and dramatic contrasts. At the heart of the composition, two fish gracefully swim in opposite directions, linked by a mystical cord that binds them together, embodying the duality and connectivity inherent in the Pisces sign. The fish are enveloped by swirling waves and bubble trails that enhance the aquatic and otherworldly feel of the piece.Above these ethereal aquatic beings is a dark, expansive sky punctuated by stars, planets, and celestial symbols that connect the scene to the wider cosmos. The inclusion of astrological symbols—the glyphs for Pisces and Neptune—further tie the artistic elements to themes of intuition, emotion, and the subconscious, which are often associated with the zodiac sign.Van der Stok's mastery in printmaking is evident in the detailed textural contrasts and the balance of light and dark, creating a compelling visual narrative that invites viewers to consider the vastness of both the oceanic depths and the celestial heights.
