More about this artwork
"Evening in February, Riddarfjärden (Stockholm)," painted by Eugène Jansson between 1892 and 1893, is a captivating portrayal of the serene yet starkly dynamic essence of a winter evening in Stockholm. This artwork captures a view over Riddarfjärden, a bay of Lake Mälaren in the heart of Sweden's illustrious capital. In this painting, Jansson masterfully balances the cool blues and blacks of the freezing landscape with the warm glow of twilight. The scene is lit by a blend of natural sunset colors cascading across the sky and contrasted starkly by the artificial yellow lights twinkling from the windows of the nearby buildings and street lamps. Striking orange and red streaks in the sky suggest the sun, setting far in the distance, casting a hauntingly beautiful glow that reflects off the ice-slicked waters and snowy surfaces.A significant feature of this piece is the use of perspective and light to draw the viewer's eye across the composition. From the shadowy foreground of snow-covered trees and the middle ground filled with industrial buildings emitting plumes of smoke to the expansive body of water stretching towards the horizon, Jansson’s work evokes a strong sense of tranquility amid the chilly air of a fading winter day.Eugène Jansson is renowned for his unique ability to use light and color, imbuing his night scenes with depth and emotion, making "Evening in February" not merely a visual piece but an evocative experience of the serene yet industrial atmosphere of Stockholm during the turn of the 20th century.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
