More about this artwork
We are delighted to feature the evocative painting titled "Döbelnsgatan," created by the renowned Swedish artist Eugène Jansson in 1889. This painting captures an everyday scene set on a street in what appears to be the early hours of a soft, sunlit morning. Jansson, known for his keen observation, demonstrates this quality exquisitely in this work. The painting presents a view down the Döbelnsgatan, a street once lined with modest buildings and cobblestoned paths in Stockholm. The perspective is drawn from a low vantage point, inviting viewers to step into the quiet, almost deserted street. The dirt road, flecked with stones and sparse grass, leads the eye toward a small group of figures in the distance, enhancing the depth of the scene. On the left, a building adorned with a protruding, ornate lamp extends the intimate feel of the locale. The right side is dominated by a long, high wall in a warm, sunlit hue that reflects the early morning light, contributing a serene glow to the scene. The lush greenery peeking over the wall adds a burst of life, contrasting with the otherwise muted tones.Jansson's mastery in handling light and shadow is evident, as is his ability to evoke a mood through color and form. This painting not only depicts a specific location but also conveys a moment of quiet solitude and the beauty of a new day.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
