More about this artwork
The artwork titled "Portrait of Ernest Thiel" was created in 1902 by Swedish painter Eugène Jansson, renowned for his distinctive style and intense use of color. This portrait is an exquisite example of Jansson's transition from his nocturnal cityscapes to more personal and introspective subjects. In this painting, Ernest Thiel, a prominent Swedish banker and art patron, is depicted with a solemn and contemplative demeanor. The portrait is rendered primarily in soft yet expressive tones. Thiel’s imposing figure is set against a vibrant, swirling background of warm yellows and oranges, suggesting a sort of intellectual or emotional tumult. The use of color and swirling patterns in the background contrasts sharply with the stark, realistic depiction of Thiel. His dark hair and beard, furrowed brow, and the deep blues of his suit are painted with fine detail, capturing a moment of introspection and perhaps melancholy. The red tie adds a subtle yet striking touch to the composition, drawing attention to Thiel's face, the emotional and focal center of the painting. This work is not only a testament to Jansson's skill as a portrait artist but also reflects the depth of his relationship with Thiel, hinting at the complex personality and moods of the man who was both his patron and friend.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
