More about this artwork
Henri van der Stok's evocative woodcut print, "Sterrenbeeld steenbok," superbly captures the essence of the Capricorn zodiac sign. Created during a period spanning from 1880 to 1946, this artwork is a quintessential example of van der Stok's knack for blending symbolic imagery with art nouveau influences. In this striking monochrome piece, the central figure is a majestic Capricorn, or the sea goat, depicted with a prominently arched, textured horn and a serene yet enigmatic facial expression. The creature stands atop a fragmented, geometric landscape that hints at mountainous terrains, which could symbolize the proverbial heights Capricorns aspire to climb in their life journeys. The background is studded with stars, emphasizing the astrological context and adding a touch of the cosmic to the overall composition.Van der Stok’s technique in linework and contrast between the stark white of the Capricorn and the deep, absorbing black of the sky creates a compelling focal point that draws the viewer into a nocturnal world. The use of space and symmetrical balance in this print adds a layer of tranquility and mysticism."Sterrenbeeld steenbok" is not only a celebration of those born under the Capricorn sign but also an artistic tribute to the enduring human quest for meaning among the stars.
