More about this artwork

Wander through the serene landscape captured vividly in "Südliche Landschaft," a remarkable creation by the esteemed painter Marie Egner. In this painting, the observer is transported to a soothing Southern countryside, where elements of tranquility and timeless beauty converge.Egner's composition is framed by tall, slender cypress trees that draw the eye upwards, while their dark, almost verdant tones offset the lighter, subdued background hues, suggesting a late afternoon ambiance. The setting is composed of serene classical ruins that hint at a narrative of past civilizations and enduring legacies. These architectural elements, rendered with warm earthy tones of ochre and subtle orange, contrast beautifully against the expansive, cloud-strewn sky.In the foreground, rough, unkempt paths and scattered artifacts lie amidst the wild grass, inviting the viewer to ponder the stories these grounds have witnessed. Each brushstroke conveys Egner's masterful ability to capture the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and realism that beckons the viewer to step into the scene."Südliche Landschaft" is not merely a depiction of a geographic locale but a profound meditation on nature's enduring beauty and the silent tales of history whispered by ancient ruins.

Marie Egner was an Austrian painter.

Egner was born on 25 August 1850 in Bad Radkersburg, Austria. She took her first drawing lessons in Graz with Hermann von Königsbrunn, then went to Düsseldorf from 1872 to 1875, where she studied with Carl Jungheim. In 1882, she went to Vienna to live with her mother, but spent her summers at the art colony in Plankenberg Castle, near Neulengbach, where she took lessons with Emil Jakob Schindler until 1887. A study trip to England followed from 1887 to 1889. Shortly after, her first exhibition was held at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. She also exhibited in Germany and England.
