More about this artwork

This painting by George Bellows, titled "Five Cows," showcases a serene rural scene with five cows in various positions and colors—brown, white with black patches, and cream—against a backdrop of a subdued landscape. The artist uses a somewhat loose brushstroke style to give the image a sense of immediacy and vitality, which is characteristic of his work. The foreground holds an undulating grassy surface, possibly a hill, with a blanket or garment draped partially over it, adding an element of human presence though no humans are depicted. The background appears calm with a hint of a sky that might be clearing up or turning to dusk, adding a soft contrast to the solid forms of the cows. The atmosphere Bellows captures is peaceful, pastoral, and reflective of everyday rural life, emphasizing a naturalistic and unembellished portrayal of the animals and their environment.

George Bellows (1882-1925) was one of America’s greatest artists when he died at the young age of 42. Rooted in realism with focus on social, political and cultural issues, his powerful drawings and paintings depicted boxing matches, and the gritty life of the New York working class. The violent atmosphere of his drawings was a great contrast to his lithographs of seascapes, nudes and portraits with modernism influences.
