More about this artwork
"1902 Finds the Helm in Safe Hands" is an evocative political cartoon by Udo Keppler, depicting President Theodore Roosevelt as the steadfast captain of the "Ship of State." In this colorful and detailed illustration, Roosevelt is portrayed in a yellow rain slicker, gripping the ship’s wheel firmly against what can be inferred as the rough seas of political challenges. His focused expression and firm grip on the wheel symbolize his resolute and determined leadership. The turbulent waters and stormy skies in the background reflect the complex issues faced during his presidency, while the seagulls flying above the tumultuous waves add a dynamic energy to the scene, suggesting both turmoil and the freedom found in navigating through it.
