More about this artwork

"Hideous Larvae" is a compelling and haunting work by French symbolist artist Odilon Redon, created in 1896. This lithograph is part of Redon's exploration into the world of the unseen and the unknown, delving into themes of the subconscious and the supernatural. In this image, Redon employs his masterful grasp of chiaroscuro, manipulating light and shadow to reveal a macabre scene nestled in obscurity. The central part of the work features mysterious faces that emerge from the darkness, their expressions ghostly and enigmatic. These spectral visages confront the viewer with a penetrating gaze that seems both vacant and intensely profound, as if they are the bearers of some arcane knowledge or secret. The atmosphere of the painting is thick with a sense of unease and foreboding. The rough, textured strokes and the stark contrasts amplify this effect, creating a feeling that something beyond the ordinary is manifesting. Redon's use of vagueness and ambiguity invites the viewers to let their imaginations soar and to find personal interpretations to the eerie and possibly transformative encounter represented in "Hideous Larvae."This piece is exemplary of Redon’s ability to weave visual narratives that exist between the realms of reality and fantasy, making a profound statement on the human condition and the darker corners of the human psyche.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
