More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of "Butterflies," a stunning masterpiece painted by the French symbolist artist Odilon Redon around 1910. Renowned for his unique blend of the fantastical with the natural, Redon transports viewers to a whimsical landscape where the ethereal and the tangible intertwine. In this remarkable piece, an array of vividly colored butterflies flutters gracefully, dominating the canvas with a burst of life. These ethereal insects, painted with a rich array of hues from radiant yellows to deep, shimmering reds, seem to dance across a dreamlike sky. The background, a soft, surreal azure blending into gentle yellows, suggests a serene, open sky that extends endlessly, evoking a sense of freedom and tranquility. The lower portion of the painting reveals a rugged, rocky terrain adorned with patches of blooming flowers, adding a textural contrast to the smooth expanses above. This juxtaposition of the rugged earth with the delicate, floating butterflies creates a dynamic visual balance, symbolizing the unity of earth and air."Butterflies" stands out as a testament to Redon's fascination with nature and his exceptional ability to elevate it into the realm of fantasy. His use of color and form transcends mere representation; it invites viewers to look beyond the visible, towards a realm of emotion and imagination.Whether you are a longtime admirer of Redon or new to his work, "Butterflies" offers a captivating glimpse into the artist's visionary mind. Its beauty lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its ability to evoke wonder and introspection.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
