More about this artwork

"In der Pergola" is a luminous and vibrant painting by Austrian artist Marie Egner, dated 1910. This picturesque artwork captures a serene moment under a pergola, enveloped by the warm embrace of a sunny day. The pergola itself is draped with lush vines and leaves, filtering the sunlight to create a play of light and shadow across the stone path and garden walls. The focal point of the composition is a rustic wooden table, bearing the weight of a plentiful harvest. The table showcases a basket filled with rich, dark grapes and plump, scarlet tomatoes, offering a feast for the eyes. Additional tomatoes and a lone pepper rest on the stone tabletop, their vivid colors enhanced by the natural light. The painting's backdrop reveals a garden pathway that invites the viewer to explore further, surrounded by flourishing greenery and dappled sunlight. Egner’s brushwork excellently captures the texture of the foliage and the roughness of the wooden pergola structure, adding depth and realism to the scene. This masterpiece exemplifies Egner's skill in portraying natural settings and her ability to create a visual experience that not only depicts a scene but also evokes the warmth and abundance of a late summer day.
