We are delighted to present "Portret van Marguerite Helfrich," a captivating etching by the celebrated Dutch artist, Jan Toorop, created in 1897. This artwork illuminates Toorop's mastery in portraiture and his unique approach to capturing the essence of his subjects. The portrait features Marguerite Helfrich, depicted in a striking profile view. Her delicate features are rendered with gentle, flowing lines that evoke a sense of softness and depth. The artist’s attention to detail is apparent in the subtle textures of her skin and the intricate waves of her hair, which softly tumble down her neck. One of the most remarkable aspects of this piece is the stylized, almost ethereal quality of the floral motif that elegantly frames Marguerite's face. This floral design does not merely adorn her but seems to emanate from her, suggesting a deep connection between the subject and the natural elements that surround her.Jan Toorop's style in this work reflects influences from the Art Nouveau movement, noted for its organic forms and curved lines, which can be seen in the fluid contours that define this composition."Portret van Marguerite Helfrich" is not just a testament to Toorop's artistic skill, but also a profound expression of personality and inner beauty, captured through the intimate and thoughtful medium of etching.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a 19-century Dutch-Javanese painter who extensively experimented with different artistic styles ranging from Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau to Pointillism. He was famous for using highly stylized slim figures and dynamic lines that were influenced by Indonesian motifs and curvilinear lines. His most famous poster artwork “Delft Salad Oil”, commissioned by The Dutch Oil Company, became so iconic that the Dutch Art Nouveau painting style is given the nickname "the salad oil style". Despite the fact that Toorop's expertise was in producing designs for marketing and advertisements, he also produced a number of fine art pieces that dealt with darker subjects including the human physche and emotions.
